Valve teases HL2: Ep 3 PDF Print E-mail
Action
Posted by Scotty on Wednesday, 15 October 2008
ImageHad things gone according to plan, Half-Life 2: Episode 3 would already be old news. After all, when Valve originally said that it would rebrand Half-Life 2: Aftermath as Episode 1 and release subsequent installments on an episodic timeline, the final game in the Gordon Freeman saga was expected to land by Christmas 2007. Of course, Valve ended up releasing its highly acclaimed The Orange Box during that time frame, which included Episode Two along with Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Team Fortress 2, and Portal.

Now, eyes have turned to the long-promised Episode Three. In an interview with gaming blog Kikizo, Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi revealed that information on the game may be just around the corner. "We may at the very end of the year," said Lombardi, when asked when Valve plans to announce or show the game.

Although an announcement may be impending, a release date remains farther away on the horizon. "The next time you play as Gordon will be longer than the distance between [Half-Life 2] to [Episode 1], and [Episode 1] to [Episode 2]," cryptically noted Lombardi. Half-Life 2 was released for the PC in November 2004, with Episode 1 following in June 2006 and Episode 2 debuting alongside The Orange Box in October 2007. Doing the math, that would put Episode 3's release date as far off as 2010.

With its multiyear development cycles, the term episodic is a bit misleading, a fact that Lombardi acknowledged. "I think our philosophy was that, we spent six years on Half-Life 2 and upwards of $40 million, and basically 80 percent of the company ended working up on it for a good chunk of that time. And that was just too much; nobody wanted to do that again... I think the goal is to get away from that 'half a lifetime, mountains of money' to produce the next thing, and we've succeeded in that--and maybe we could have chosen a better word to describe what we were doing."

Far Cry 2 Goes Gold PDF Print E-mail

ImageOctober 14, 2008 - Far Cry 2 has gone gold, publisher Ubisoft announced in an official statement. This means that the development stage is completed, and the game is now ready for duplication.

Far Cry 2 is the sequel to the critically-acclaimed first-person shooter Far Cry. While the original was made by Crysis developer Crytek, Far Cry 2 is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and will run "on a tailor-made new gaming engine." Even though Far Cry 2 is an impressive looking game, Ubisoft is banking on more than the game's graphic engine by attempting to immerse "players in an entirely new kind of gaming experience." The game will feature "non-scripted enemy Artificial Intelligence, entirely destructible environments, dynamic fire and storm effects, and multiplayer gameplay, all in a completely open world 50km2 environment."

Unlike the original, which placed players on a tropical island, Far Cry 2 throws gamers into "a war-torn, African state, where they will be forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to survive and move ever-closer to their primary objective - the Jackal."

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Far Cry will retail for $59.99, whereas the PC counterpart will cost $49.99. All three versions will release on October 21.

ImageAustralia, October 7, 2008 - Alienware and Activision are teaming up to hold a massive Call of Duty: World at War launch party on November 8th in Melbourne at Swinburne University. How massive is 'massive'? We're talking a 24 hour party with 100+ Alienware Desktops and 100 Xbox 360s running Call of Duty: World at War and James Bond 007 in Quantum of Solace.

I guess that's pretty massive.

Not only is the event before the launch of both titles, giving Aussie gamers the chance for some serious hands-on time ahead of their respective launch dates, but there'll be plenty of other stuff to do too, such as indoor laser skirmish in an underground car park, "awesome arcade games" and a Guitar Hero lounge. Plus, free V energy drinks throughout and plenty of promo girls.

Each attendee will also receive a Call of Duty: World at War show bag, containing a self-heating coffee mug, dog tags, CoD hat, t-shirt, CoD pen, lanyard and a copy of Spider-Man 3 on PC.

The party is limited to 800 attendees plus press, and tickets are AUD $29 a pop. For further information and to purchase tickets, head on over to Alienware's site.
