EA and Crytek are getting into the spirit of giving by once again offering Crysis Wars -- the multiplayer component to this year's Crysis Warhead -- absolutely free for 10 days. Available from December 19 to 28, all players have to do to download the game is register at the Crysis community site, where they'll receive their unique access key. These copies of Crysis Wars expire at 11:59 p.m. PT on December 28, so interested parties should jump on this immediately.
The free download also includes the two new multiplayer levels from this week's Holiday Map Pack, videos for which are available here and here. Between these new maps and temporarily handing out the online game for free, the follow-up to Crysis ought to provide some much-needed holiday reprieve from chilly weather and even frostier in-laws.

Crysis Warhead is the videogame equivalent of a summer action movie, and while it's more action-heavy than its highly acclaimed predecessor, it still retains its brains. Like Crysis, Warhead is a sandbox shooter that gives you large amounts of freedom as to how you approach each tactical situation. And there are plenty of tactical situations, because Warhead seems aimed at those who felt that Crysis was a bit too slow-paced and cerebral at times. But while it doesn't quite match the over-the-top insanity of a Call of Duty game, Warhead does prove that Crytek can deliver an intense action game.
Warhead is a companion game to Crysis, with a story that runs concurrently to that in the first game. An alien artifact has been discovered on a tropical island, and after the United States and North Korea race to seize it, an alien invasion erupts, flash freezing the island and putting the world at risk. The difference is in perspective; you now get to play as British Sergeant Michael Sykes, aka Psycho, the blowhard from the first game. Warhead takes place on "the other side of the island" that Crysis takes place on. If you played that game you already know the beginning and the end, so what matters here is the journey.

Crysis Warhead seeks to improve upon everything we loved about Crysis and add a few tricks of its own. Running on an optimized CryEngine 2.0, Warhead tells a story parallel to the one in the first game by following Psycho on his own adventure. We got our hands on a frozen tundra of a level that was entirely different from what we previously saw at Comic-Con.
The level kicked off with a deep freeze immobilizing Psycho's fellow soldiers and an imminent attack by enemy soldiers also wearing nanosuits. This initial confrontation prompted us to use a new grenade that sets off an orb of energy that disables any nanosuit technology in range. It reminded me of the power-drain item in Halo 3 in that it not only affects enemies but will also take away your own powers if you get too close.
