Today’s interview features Katie “Khatie” Postma, a longtime community manager. Her devotion to “her” players is legendary, and such an asset to a forum that many of her fans in the USA have forgiven her for being Canadian. She’s agreed to give Massive Gamer a few minutes of her time in the midst of getting settled at her brand new gig – Community Manager for Netdevil’s Jumpgate: Evolution.
Massive Gamer: So, starting with an introduction, which one of your billion community jobs is the one from where most MMO fans might recognize you?
Katie Postma: I would have to say Stargate Worlds. I was there for most of the past three years, starting before the announcement of the game and finishing during the closed Beta phase. It was the largest pre-launch community I have been involved with.
Massive Gamer: Which of your gigs so far would you say has a special place in your heart?
Postma: Myst/Uru is probably the dearest to my heart and always will be. The fans there are special – I know hundreds of them personally and because being a Myst fan led to my career in the game industry, I will always be thankful for the fans and the games.
Massive Gamer: How do you see the role of Community Manager?
Postma: Besides a combination of lion-tamer, daycare giver and cheerleader? I see the role as the “Bridge to Somewhere” (quoting myself from the Jumpgate Evolution forums). Community Managers have to know how to keep their players happy about the game developers but also keep the developers happy about the players. Fans and developers don’t typically have a direct line to each other outside the Community Manager, but they both want the same things – for the game to be awesome and for the game to be popular. So the “managing” part is making sure that the players know what the developers have in mind and the developers understand their players' wants and needs.
