EA CEO John Riccitiello takes the piracy of The Sims 3 with good humor. Talking to IndustryGamers (via Big Download Blog), he joked that they "identified our secret marketing campaign!" On a more serious note, he pointed out that some sections are off-limits to players who aren't registered. "It's a very content intensive game," he said, "so to have the pirated version and not have access to that is a little bit like having a subscription for Starbucks and only getting one coffee. It just whets your appetite rather than satisfy your ultimate goal."
Though the piracy for the game was fairly widespread even before the release of the game, sales seemed unaffected, moving a staggering 1.4 million in the first week alone. Maybe it would have sold even more if not for piracy, but the added incentive of extra content seems to have swayed at least some of them to buying the full product.
