2009 StarCraft II Release PDF Print E-mail
Strategy

ImageIt's been a little more than two years since StarCraft II was announced, but the end of the long wait appears to be in sight. Rumors abound that the open beta is nearly upon us, which suggests that it will indeed be arriving this year. But what does Blizzard have to say about it?

Lead designer Chris Sigaty told press2play (via Kotaku) that the team will indeed be trying to get it out this year. But that promise comes with a caveat.

In what appears to be a return to tradition for Blizzard, Sigaty said, "We're not going to ship the game if it's not ready." Seems they learned their lesson from the World of WarCraft launch.

Odds seem good that SCII will indeed be finally arriving this year. But you never know when Blizzard will suddenly decide that something isn't enough, and suddenly impose a delay.

Thanks to World of WarCraft, they've got all the time in the world.

ImageIt was the kind of moment that I hated in Sins of Solar Empire. Barely into the start of my last session, a gang of space pirates came knocking while my main fleet was engaged two systems away and unable to help.

Fortunately, I was playing the new micro-expansion Entrenchment. And I happened to be busy laying mines.

So instead of looting and pillaging a relatively defenseless planet, the pirates were led on a merry chase around the minefield while my fleet finished up and came home. There wasn't much left by the time it got back.

Mines are one of the new elements that lie at the heart of Entrenchment's new gameplay philosophy. Thanks to an array of new defensive emplacements, the days of competing fleets bypassing heavily defended chokepoints and racing straight to the soft interior are over. Spaceships trying that now are more apt to run into mines, newly improved fortifications like the TEC Gauss Defense Platform, and the all-new starbases. Starbases that are several times more powerful than the strongest capital ship, and several times more expensive.

ImageThe first Sins of a Solar Empire "micro-expansion," Entrenchment, is now available for download -- just over a year after the release of the original. Things have changed a lot in that short period of time, as fans are about to discover.

Entrenchment can be found on Impulse for $9.95, with new content including minefields and starbases. They should bring a nice array of new strategies to the table for Sins fans, who will likely find the ability to actually guard chokepoints a welcome relief from the more freewheeling original.

We've been playing Entrenchment for a couple days now, so stay tuned for our review. You should be able to see our final thoughts in a couple days.
